Chimpanzees and modern humans are genetically, and uncomfortably to some, so close to each other that scientists in the past argued that Chimpanzees were a species of the human family.
In 2003 biologists at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan, provided new genetic evidence that lineages of chimpanzees (currently Pan troglodytes) and modern humans (Homo sapiens) had diverged so recently that chimpanzees should be re-classed as Homo troglodytes.
The move had intended to make chimpanzees full members of our genus Homo, along with Neandertals and all other human-like fossil species.
