Alaska and Maine want to join Canada... and so does Greenland!

Now all we need is for the Turks and Caicos Islands to get on board... so we don't have to go to Florida or Arizona in the winter anymore!!!!!!

Canada has a lot of issues as a nation. Is the solution to join the United States and form an even stronger nation?

Joining a failing republic is hardly the road to strength. The biggest ‘issue’ Canada has is that its closest ally is suddenly turning against it like a mad dog. So, you think Canadians would give up their universal healthcare and embrace being ass-deep in guns and paranoia like the Americans? Sending their kids to school with bulletproof backpacks, subjecting them to the trauma of shooter drills as if school is a warzone? When the US right-wingers have just elected their first openly fascist Hitler-quoting president? Pfft, as if.

Tolerate unlimited anonymous political donations so the government can be bought and corrupted? That's wacko. I'm over 60, and in my lifetime, I've only met two people who wanted to be American. One was a crazy Russian immigrant, and one was a far-right extremist nutcase. I have NEVER encountered a single normal Canadian who wanted to join the rotten 19th century backwater shitshow to the south that blithely buries shredded schoolchildren and does nothing about guns, where hundreds of thousands go medically bankrupt every year, where countless thousands die of treatable ailments, where people would happily starve a hundred just to avoid feeding one freeloader, where women are dragged back into the dark ages. Uncivil and uncivilized.

The US is loud and full of itself, but not viewed as the ‘strongest’ anymore. It doesn't even rank in the top 20 when it comes to health, longevity or freedoms. It's become just a degraded plutocracy, existing only to enrich its 1%. The Trump Reich will accelerate its decline. The fact that Diapered Donald thinks he can just absorb sovereign nations because the United States wants them is insulting and megalomaniacal. (Although he'll likely drop the idea when someone finally gets around to telling him that most Canadians would be Democrats.)

If it ever did happen, I would be a hardcore resistance member and fight to the death to avoid becoming American. 🇨🇦

Allan: Since Canadians have begun boycotting US products, what are some Canadian products we can boycott in return? "A Proud American!"

You should be embarrassed to think about boycotting Canada. 

 Your country is the one trying to destroy the country next to you and absorb it into yours. This is the same as Russia invading Ukraine. 

 If you are shocked over Canada rejecting joining what you have been told since birth is "the best country in earth," it is because you have been lied to about this!!! 

 In quality of life for average people... the USA is not even in the top 10 in most things.

 Canada is standing up to an unjustifiable act of aggression by the USA. An act that has cost the USA all of its friends and is making it an international pariah. 

 Open your eyes and you will see that in less than a month you new leader has made the USA one of the bad guys in world affairs. 

At the same level as Russia. 

 Now watch as the prices of almost everything in the USA go up... as well as unemployment. 

You will be lucky if the USA does not break up into several countries in the next few years.

How can the United States and Canada merge to form one greater nation?

They can’t. Not ever.

Martin Fowler, being from North Carolina, you may not be familiar with the fact that Canada is a long set of compromises so that English-speakers and French speakers could share a polity. The citizens of the United States would never make those compromises, such as official bilingualism in English and French, and so that’s a non-starter.

Second, you may not know the difference in our cultures, expressed in part by very different laws, is felt very deeply by Canadians. There’s no chance that we’d accept being absorbed by a much larger population with (in our opinion) regressive laws on guns, mass incarceration, private prisons, a health insurance system that leaves millions of people without health care, the death penalty, restrictive abortion laws, and so on.

Beyond the laws, Canadians see the United States as a country with deep social problems that we do not share, though we have problems enough of our own. To name one, mass killings by white supremacists aren’t a recurring feature of Canadian life.

Finally, there are political culture, history, and identity. Many of those English-speakers whom you imagine as potential Americans are descendants of residents of the thirteen colonies who left their lands and homes rather than become Americans. They rejected your reality and substituted their own. That’s our founding myth.

There have been two wars in which the militias of what is now Canada fought off American armies set on annexation. Much of Canadian history is one strategy after another to make sure that Canada keeps visibly separate from the United States. 

Because we are not, and do not want to be American.

Ask yourself, would you be willing to become Canadian? Have a parliament and a monarch and a government in Ottawa and the Canadian constitution and Supreme Court? Give up your national anthem?

No, I didn’t think you would. Why would you expect Canadians to do the equivalent?

What makes America incompatible with Canada?

Last week you asked if there ever could be  a merger of Canada and the United States.

Even if Canada asked to be annexed and agreed to live under the US Constitution, (?) it wouldn't happen.

Republicans would never allow it!

By allowing that many Canadians to become US citizens, they would be locking themselves out of the presidency in perpetuity.
