Another reality is that Canada has the best educated work force in the world.
Most people in Canada now have university or college degrees. That is probably not the case where they came from, and where they come from, having a university degree makes them special.
In Canada it just makes them average.
It is also true that Canadian educational institutions are very high quality. The university they graduated from might not be as good as the universities in Canada. I know a number of immigrants who came to Canada with computer science degrees, and now work as carpenters. The reality is that they were better carpenters than they were computer programmers.
Another reality is that carpenters can make more money than computer programmers if they run their own company, are good at it, and work hard. People have to realize that the streets are not paved with gold in Canada, you have to make your own gold.
My wife has two brothers who came to Canada as immigrants. One got a degree in chemistry and worked as a chemist in a petrochemical plant. The other worked as a plumber. Guess which one made more money? You guessed it, the plumber. Guess whose children are making the most money? It’s a toss up. They are all doing well.
I remember talking to an elderly Ukrainian farmer who I was buying cabbages from. He started talking about his son. “Yes he have Ph.D. in nuclear physics and in US designing atomic bombs. I so proud of him.”
Nowadays, we don’t get so many Ukrainians (I freaked out a Russian nuclear expert in Switzerland by telling him we had 2 million Ukrainians in Canada - He said “How did they get there? They weren’t allowed to leave”) so we have to rely on people from Asian countries who have more inflated expectations than Ukrainian refugees fleeing the USSR to avoid starvation and genocide.
All the Ukrainian farmers wanted was a good life for their kids. And the more recent Ukrainian immigrants I know who have computer science degrees are working as carpenters, but they are making lots of money and their kids are doing really well in school.
