"BioPanentheism"

“Conversations exploring politics... science... metaphysics...... and other unique ideas!”

"BioPanentheism holds that the 'Divine' does not merely pervade the Universe abstractly... but "Experiences Reality" directly and vicariously through the emergence of complex "Biological Consciousness" making 'Life Itself' the Medium of "God’s Awareness!"

BioPanentheism states that the Divine Spark, and Biological Life are distinct but interdependent... with the "Divine Experiencing Reality Vicariously through Conscious Living Beings!" (Sentience is about experiencing... while Sapience is about understanding and reflecting on that experience!)

Sal Explains Where Earth's Water Came From?

The theory that... "Holds Water!"

For centuries, scientists and philosophers alike have pondered a deceptively simple question: Where did Earth’s water come from?

Our planet, Terra, is a watery world... about 71% of its surface is covered in oceans... and water is essential to all known life!

But how did it get here?

Several competing theories have emerged over the decades.

Some suggest that Earth formed dry, and water was delivered later by icy comets or asteroids.

Others believe that water has always been here, locked inside the very minerals and dust that gave rise to our world.

As strange as it sounds, the latest research seems to be pointing toward that second idea... and it just so happens to align with a theory I’ve been developing myself.

The Cosmic Water Delivery Debate!

Let’s briefly examine the main contenders:

  1. Comet or Asteroid Delivery: Known as the "late veneer" hypothesis, this theory posits that icy bodies from the outer solar system bombarded the early Earth and deposited water. While once popular, the deuterium-to-hydrogen ratios (D/H) in most comets don’t quite match Earth’s water signature... casting doubt on this explanation!
  2. Outgassing from the Mantle: This theory suggests water was already embedded in the dust and rock that formed Earth and was released via volcanic activity. As the young planet differentiated, lighter materials... including water... rose toward the surface and atmosphere. (This concept is gaining increasing support among planetary scientists.)
  3. Solar Nebula Capture: A more speculative idea, it suggests Earth may have directly absorbed hydrogen and oxygen from the solar nebula, forming water early in its formation.

A Theory That Holds Water!

My own take builds on the outgassing hypothesis:

* Water molecules were mixed in with the space dust that coalesced into our planet... and since water is lighter than rock, it naturally migrated to the surface as things cooled down.

This theory is surprisingly well-supported by geological and cosmochemical evidence.

During Earth’s violent infancy, when the surface was molten and unstable, materials differentiated by density.

Iron and nickel sank to form the core.

Lighter materials... including silicates, gases, and water... rose toward the surface!

As the mantle convected and volcanic activity exploded across the globe, these water-rich minerals began to release their moisture as steam and vapour!

This gradual outgassing formed the early atmosphere, and eventually, once Earth cooled enough, oceans began to condense from the sky!

The Science Behind It:

  • Ancient zircon crystals from over 4.3 billion years ago show evidence of liquid water on Earth’s surface... suggesting that water existed very early... possibly even during accretion!
  • Carbonaceous chondrites... primitive meteorites... contain water and match Earth’s hydrogen isotope ratios better than most comets!
  • Modern simulations show that planets forming in the inner solar system could retain substantial water content during accretion if the starting material was already hydrated.

In Short: Your Theory Holds Water 💧😉

While the debate isn’t over, there’s growing consensus that Earth’s water didn’t need to be delivered from afar. It may have always been here... quietly locked in rocks and dust, waiting for the right conditions to emerge and pour forth!

This perspective doesn’t just rewrite our understanding of Earth... it also has implications for "exoplanet research" and the search for life beyond!

If water is built into the very bones of planetary formation, then wet worlds may be more common than we ever imagined!

What is the general public opinion of BioPanentheism?

There is no broad, well-documented public or academic consensus on BioPanentheism specifically... as it is a relatively new and specialized philosophical position... with a (so far) limited following!

However, a general opinion from available sources can be summarized as follows: Biopanentheism is generally viewed as a modern, life-centred variant of panentheism, emphasizing the centrality of biological life and ecological interconnectedness as the primary expression of the Divine!

It distinguishes itself from traditional Theism, (which posits a personal, separate God) and pantheism, (which treats the universe and God as identical) proposing instead that the Universe is intimately connected with the Divine, especially through Life and Consciousness... "while not reducing all existence to a Deity!"

  • Among proponents, BioPanentheism is positively regarded as a framework that harmonizes scientific understanding with a sense of Sacredness in Nature and Life!

  • Advocates highlight its ecological and ethical orientation, promoting reverence for organisms, sustainable living, and a scientific approach to Spirituality that avoids Supernaturalism or Dogma!

  • It is appreciated for its attempt to balance rational inquiry with Spiritual and Ethical commitments!

  • In niche philosophical and consciousness studies, it is seen as a creative thought experiment offering a participatory, evolving relationship between Consciousness and Divinity, providing an alternative to both reductive materialism and traditional Theism!reddit.com

  • From a more critical or traditional Religious Perspective, Panentheists and Biocentric Views, including Biopanentheism, have been critiqued for blurring boundaries between Creator and Creation, potentially undermining the notion of a personal, transcendent Deity and diluting the distinctive value of humanity relative to the rest of the biosphere.cfc.sebts.edu

  • In mainstream theology and philosophy, biopanentheism has not achieved widespread recognition or acceptance.

  • Broader panentheistic ideas are more regularly debated, with both positive and negative assessments... but the specific Life-Centred orientation of biopanentheism remains marginal and largely confined to those seeking to integrate scientific naturalism with Spirituality.allanwjanssen.com+2

In summary, biopanentheism is generally regarded favorably within eco-spiritual and philosophical naturalist circles for its ethical, scientific, and life-centred approach... while it is either unfamiliar or met with philosophical/theological skepticism outside those contexts!

There is currently no mass scholarly or religious endorsement or sustained critique of the concept itself, only early-stage discussion and exploration among proponents and niche audiences.

Jung, Freud, and BioPanentheism: Psychology Meets the Divine Flow

By Allan W. Janssen | Children of the Divine

Can modern psychology illuminate the Divine?

When exploring BioPanentheism... [The idea that the Divine experiences reality vicariously through biological life.] It’s natural to ask whether any schools of psychology resonate with this worldview!

Two towering figures in psychological thought, Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, offer contrasting legacies.

Surprisingly, one offers a deep synergy with BioPanentheism, while the other provides a critical lens worth reinterpreting!

Carl Jung: A Spiritual Ally of BioPanentheism Carl Jung’s depth psychology intersects beautifully with BioPanentheism in three major ways:

1. The Collective Unconscious as a Divine Network.  Jung proposed that beneath our individual minds lies a collective unconscious... a realm of archetypes and symbols shared across humanity. In BioPanentheistic terms, this could be seen as a spiritual memory layer, a channel through which the Divine Experiences shared patterns of thought, myth, and meaning across cultures and time. (Jung’s archetypes serve as the scaffolding for the Divine’s vicarious psychological journey!)

2. Individuation as Sacred Unfolding. Jung emphasized individuation... the process of becoming one’s true self. From a BioPanentheistic lens, individuation is not just psychological growth; It's the Divine unfolding more fully within a living being, shaping a unique node of experience in the web of biological consciousness.

3. Synchronicity and the Flow of Meaning! Jung’s idea of synchronicity... meaningful coincidences that defy causal explanation... can be reframed as ripples in the field of Divine experience. In BioPanentheism, such moments reflect subtle alignments between biology, mind, and cosmos... perhaps hints of the deeper flow that underlies all perception!

Jung saw the psyche not just as a function of the brain, but as a portal to something larger.

SO... In this, BioPanentheism finds a resonant voice.

Sigmund Freud: A Materialist to Be Reimagined. Freud’s psychology, by contrast, is often viewed as reductionist, focusing on instinct, repression, and unconscious drives rooted in the survival instinct!

But even here, BioPanentheism can find reinterpretation!

1. The Id, Ego, and Superego as Interfaces Freud’s model of the psyche... Id (instinct), Ego (self), and Superego (conscience) ...could be seen in BioPanentheism as layers of filtering through which the Divine processes embodied experience:

Id = primal biological impulses!

Ego = organizing center of consciousness!

Superego = culturally shaped moral perspective!

These components may reflect how the Divine experiences the tension between raw biology, individual choice, and moral evolution!

2. Repression as Disconnection from the Divine! Freud saw repression as a mechanism that shields us from trauma... but in a BioPanentheistic model, repression might also represent a blockage in the Divine Flow.

Healing, then, is not just psychological but Spiritual: Restoring the Sacred Interface between mind and cosmos!

 3. Religion as Illusion? Freud famously declared religion a “mass delusion.” But where he saw primitive fear and wish fulfillment, BioPanentheism sees an emergent articulation of the Divine through human symbols, myths, and rituals.

Freud may have dismissed the stories... but he missed the sacred biology behind them!

Final Thoughts: A Psychology of the Divine!

Carl Jung’s vision offers a rich, symbolic, and spiritual psychology that aligns naturally with BioPanentheism. He helps us see the human psyche... not as a closed system... but as an interface for Divine unfolding!

Freud, on the other hand, reminds us that any sacred framework must also grapple with biology, instinct, and trauma... realities that shape how the Divine is Experienced through Us!

In both cases, BioPanentheism does what it does best:
