Since I spent a good part of my life in the broadcast industry I often have gab-fests with other members of the media where we discuss anything and everything but the kitchen sink...., and sometimes that too!
Lately, I have been hearing a lot of chatter about contests, gimmicks and various promotions to attract and hold listeners and I have consistently argued that the way to success in radio is with local involvement. (And I continue to emphasize this as one of the best ways to relate to, and connect, with your audience!)
By local involvement, I don't mean having a jock read some copy that was submitted to the community bulletin board, but rather giving the people who sent the message a quick phone call (show prep) to discuss their event (15 to 60 seconds) and then "playing it over the air!" (This beats the hell out of anything they can rip of the wire (sic) or find on the Internet.)
This sort of immediacy and personal contact beats any hyped-up announcement you can manufacture..., and the word of mouth it provides gives your station credibility and a closer connection to the community.
To the listener, it becomes "their" radio station!
