In a move that was long overdue iconic brands Aunt Jemima, Mrs. Butterworth's and Uncle Ben are being urged to retire with a bit of grace and class while the world adjusts to a new politically correct environment.
Any suggestion of cultural appropriation is now frowned upon kids!
On top of that here's an example of sports team names that are nay, nay: Redskins, Chiefs, Indians, Eskimos, Braves,
The Edmonton Eskimo's are now called "That Edmonton Football Team" and the Washington Redskins will now be called "The Washington Football Team" while they decide if they want to call themselves the "Washington Warriors" or the "Washington Red Hawks" or the "Washington Red Wolves" or the "Washington Hogs!" (Some other honourable mentions include the Renegades, Defenders, Senators and Sentinels.)
Politics can also determine political correctness with a few examples shown here:
*During the Jyllands-Posten cartoons controversy in 2006, several Iranian groups advocated changing the name of Danish pastry to "Roses of the Prophet Muhammad"
*World War I: the Ontario city of Berlin was renamed Kitchener
*During the 2003 invasion of Iraq, freedom fries was a short-lived political euphemism for French fries, used by some to express their disapproval of the French opposition to the invasion.
*French loaves were renamed Kiwi loaves in a number of supermarkets and bakeries in New Zealand.
This political correctness also applied to well known sports figures folks!
*Carlton "Pudge" Fisk Nickname: Pudge: Political Correctness Meter: Too insensitive to those with body-image issues.
*Dennis Ray "Oil Can" Boyd: Nickname "Oil can." Political Correctness Meter: In light of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, this nickname may send the wrong message to little leaguers
*Ed "Too Tall" Jones: Nickname: "Too Tall" Political Correctness Meter: This nickname could offend those fans who are vertically challenged.
*Ozzie "The Wizard" Smith: Nickname: The Wizard: Political Correctness Meter: Could draw the wrong attention to the practice of witchcraft.
*Lester “The Molester” Hayes Nickname: The Molester: Political Correctness Meter: This one is pretty much self-explanatory.
*Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins Nickname: The Executioner. Political Correctness Meter: This nickname could raise too much controversy around the topic of capital punishment.
*“Pistol” Pete Maravich Nickname: "Pistol" Political Correctness Meter: This nickname may glorify the use of guns.
*Kenny “The Snake” Stabler Nickname: The Snake: Political Correctness Meter: This nickname may create a sense of performance anxiety among male football fans, while creating unrealistic expectations among female football fans.
AND THEN WE GET INTO THE MOST RIDICULOUS!
*Rod “He Hate Me” Smart Nickname: He Hate Me: Political Correctness Meter: This nickname may promote an unhealthy sense of poor self-image.
*“Shoeless” Joe Jackson. Nickname: “Shoeless” Political Correctness Meter: This nickname may be too insensitive to the homeless. (Well what about all the "Shoeless Joe" restaurants around here eh?)
The way I see it anyway!
