"Let's get things back into perspective here!" (God I love that phrase!) I was driving downtown on Dundas St. this afternoon and saw two police officers riding their bicycles on patrol while they smiled and talked to everyone they met on their rounds. (Being the inquisitive kind I wondered how much they were getting paid, and why were they carrying guns while on their not-so-dangerous rounds.)
It seems a first class constable now earns between 100 to 110 thousand dollars a year, and very few of them have ever had to draw their weapon over the course of a twenty-five or thirty year career.
I think first class constables should be paid all that money if they are doing the down, dirty and dangerous jobs that go along with law enforcement, but to pay them that much to ride their bicycles around downtown is a waste of money and manpower.
There are way too many first class constables on the force and we need more second class cops (who still make $80 grand) to do things like traffic enforcement and domestic disturbances. (There is also no need for them to carry a gun unless they are getting into the habit of shooting people for speeding!)
Still others could be classified as third class constables making about $50 or 60k a year (still a generous amount) and they could handle such duties as parking and by-law enforcement.
With the move to get police spending under control it's about time we traded all those first class constables in for some second and third class cops!
The way I see it anyway!
