Allan:
Rather than being “ahead of their time” I think they were surfing the wave of the 60’s. At the forefront but not outside of the zeitgeist.
They were also highly intelligent and probably more-so than all other bands of the era. They had this high-order intelligence/self awareness in common with the king of the 70’s David Bowie.
The decade itself created social change and they were always in the vanguard of this change. But they were not so far ahead as to be “outsiders”.
Normally, figures like the Beatles miss the bus and more average thinkers achieve success. But this was one time when “The Better Kind” actually ‘took a trick’ and won.
