Saturday Morning Confusion: Why do some people like Canada more than the U.S?

I got this question sometime over the last few days and on top of Mr. Smith's reasons some people prefer Canada to 'The States' I have a few thoughts of my own that occurred to me as I was reading his answer! I will put these at the bottom!

Here are some of the reasons why:

  • Canada places more emphasis on quality of life than the U.S. does. For instance, Canadians get more paid holiday/vacation time, as well as mandatory paid maternity leaves for workers.
  • Gun control and lower crime rates in Canada. I hate to harp on this one, but it’s true.
  • Universal healthcare in Canada. Canadians and immigrants to Canada will never go bankrupt — or even receive a bill — because of a medical emergency.
  • Culturally, Canada is much more liberal than the U.S. Canada was one of the first countries to legalize same-sex marriage, and we’re cool with nudity and swearing on TV (provided it’s done past 9 pm). In Canada, teenagers can drink alcohol (at 18/19), and you can legally possess and use cannabis in Canada.
  • Religion: Like in Western Europe, religion does not play a major role in Canadian society and it stays out of politics.

O.K. Here goes: Canada is a country of MODERATION while the United States is a country of EXCESS!

There doesn't seem to be any sort of 'governor' in the engine of  American culture, society or politics as demonstrated by the election of Donald Drumpf to the office of President! (He would NEVER have been elected here!)

Other examples would be the 'wild west' attitude prevalent in most sections of U.S. society as best exemplified in the book: "The United States of Excess." Gluttony and the Dark Side of American Exceptionalism. By Robert Paarlberg.

I guess Canada and the United States can best be defined by their individual motto's:

"Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness" - U.S.

"Peace, order and good government" - Canada

The way I see it anyway!
